We’re now in the era of budget-minded Chris Ilitch, who took over as the face of ownership after Mike passed away in 2017.
That doesn’t mean the team has completely stopped making big contracts (though Tigers fans would probably be very happy if one of those big contracts didn’t materialize).
However, they have definitely left the era of abundance.

The team has the second-lowest amount in the American League Central Division, behind only the Cleveland Guardians, with less money ($100 million).
What is the luxury tax threshold in MLB?
According to Spotrac, the Detroit Tigers’ luxury tax salary is $117,398,066.
This includes average annual value plus benefits and minor league salary (burial or otherwise).
This would give the Tigers about $120 million under the luxury tax threshold of $237 million.
This is probably not necessary.
Who will have the highest contract with the Detroit Tigers in 2024?
The Tigers have only four players with annual salaries over $10 million in 2024.
Javy Baez is currently under contract with Detroit and is expected to make $25 million.
Baez alone accounts for 23.
(Then he has three years left until he makes $25 million in 2025, followed by $24 million in 2026 and 2027.
) After him he has 1 Pitcher Jack Flaherty is on a $14 million a year contract and pitcher Kenta Maeda is on a $14 million contract.
On a two-year, $24 million contract that includes $14 million this year, Mark Canna will earn $11.

Relief pitcher Andrew Chafin is the fifth highest-paid player on the team, earning $4.

So, it’s a significant drop.
The good news is that despite Baez’s mistakes, the Tigers have room to work.
