Duke Basketball Champ Reveals His New Head Coaching Gig

Andre Dawkins, a former Duke basketball guard, has taken on the role of head coach at a high school in his native state. Dawkins, who achieved national championship glory with Duke in 2010, brings experience from coaching at Mount St. Mary High School in Oklahoma City, where he amassed a commendable 38-13 record over two seasons, marking his initial foray into head coaching at any level.

Now, Dawkins is returning to his roots in Virginia to lead Charlottesville High School. At 32 years old, Dawkins, once a highly touted recruit from Atlantic Shores Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Va., last played professionally in the G League back in 2018.

He shared the news of his appointment on Thursday evening, sharing images from his introductory press conference with his wife, expressing his excitement to begin coaching the Black Knights at Charlottesville High. During his time as a standout player at Duke under the tutelage of the now-retired Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, the 6-foot-4 Dawkins earned acclaim for his sharpshooting prowess, boasting a career 3-point shooting percentage of over 40%. Despite his athleticism and scoring ability, Dawkins never quite reached double-digit scoring averages. Following his collegiate career, Dawkins went undrafted in the 2014 NBA Draft but secured a brief stint with the Miami Heat, appearing in four games during his rookie season before transitioning to the NBA D-League, now known as the G League, where he continued his professional basketball journey.
