Vikings Sign Tight End Robert Tonyan
The Vikings have bolstered their tight end group for the second time this week. On Thursday, Minnesota announced the acquisition of seasoned veteran Robert Tonyan, whose name is pronounced TUN-yin.
This move brings a wealth of experience to the team, with Tonyan having appeared in 85 games and making 24 starts. Interestingly, he now completes a tour of duty within the NFC North, having previously spent time with each team in the division.
Originally hailing from Illinois, Tonyan began his NFL journey as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2017, though he was released before the season commenced. He found his stride with the Green Bay Packers, joining their practice squad in December 2017 and eventually earning a spot on the active roster in 2018. Notably, he shared the field with newly acquired Vikings running back Aaron Jones until the 2022 season.
Tonyan made significant contributions during his tenure with the Packers, amassing 137 receptions for 1,437 yards and 17 touchdowns in 68 games, starting in 18 of them. His prowess in the end zone was particularly notable in 2020, where his 11 touchdown receptions placed him among the league’s top performers in that category.
In the recent past, Tonyan’s performance for the Bears included 11 receptions for 112 yards on 17 targets from their quarterbacks.
Having faced the Vikings 10 times previously, including eight clashes while with the Packers and both matchups against Minnesota as a member of the Bears last season, Tonyan is familiar with the NFC North rivalry.
It’s worth noting that Vikings passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Angelichio previously coached Tonyan during his time in Green Bay in 2018.
Tonyan’s collegiate career saw him at Indiana State from 2012 to 2016, initially as a quarterback before transitioning to wide receiver for the Sycamores.
In addition to Tonyan, the Vikings recently added tight end Sammis Reyes through the International Pathway Program following his participation in the rookie minicamp on a pro tryout basis. The tight end group now comprises T.J. Hockenson, Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt, Nick Muse, Trey Knox, Reyes, and Tonyan.
