PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Pirates made history last night at PNC Park, hitting a franchise-record seven home runs in a 14-2 rout of the New York Mets. The offensive explosion was so intense that the Pirates ran out of fireworks, which are typically used to celebrate home runs.
The Pirates’ bats came alive early and often, with Rowdy Tellez and Bryan Reynolds each hitting two home runs, including a grand slam. The team’s seven home runs tied a franchise record, set back in 2007. The Mets, on the other hand, tied a club record for the most home runs allowed in a game.
The Pirates’ offense was led by Tellez, who finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs. Reynolds also had a big night, going 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs. Other contributors included Jack Suwinski, who hit a solo home run, and Ke’Bryan Hayes, who hit a two-run shot.
On the mound, Pirates rookie starter Paul Skenes was impressive, allowing just two runs on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in seven strong innings. The win was Skenes’ third of the season, and it marked the first time he had pitched seven innings in his young career.
The Mets, on the other hand, struggled to find their footing. Starter Carlos Carrasco was tagged for six runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings, and the bullpen didn’t fare much better. The Mets’ only runs came on a two-run homer by Pete Alonso in the top of the third.
The win was a much-needed one for the Pirates, who had lost four of their last five games coming into last night’s contest. With the victory, the Pirates improved to 42-40 on the season, while the Mets fell to 45-37.
After the game, Pirates manager Derek Shelton praised his team’s offensive performance. “That was a big night for us,” Shelton said. “We’ve been struggling a bit lately, but tonight we came out and swung the bats well. It was a great team effort.”
For their part, the Mets were left shaking their heads. “That was a tough one,” said Mets manager Buck Showalter. “We just couldn’t stop them. They were hitting everything we threw up there.”
The two teams will meet again tonight at PNC Park, with the Pirates looking to build on last night’s momentum. With the way their offense is firing, it’s hard to bet against them.
